Life is unpredictable, everyone knows this. There are things in this world that you have no power to change such as how other people will treat you. But there are things that you can change, such as your attitude towards all the adverse situations that happens to you. You are the factors that is within your control to change, not the external stimulus.
Nothing in this world is able to make you happy forever, only God can do it. Apart from God, you can help yourself too, by not focusing on the things that agitate you, which often are the things that you can’t change. Focus on the things that is within your control to change, we call it “your attitude towards the unchangeable”.
You are stronger than you know about yourself. Your soul has the capacity and resiliency to preserver and endure hardship that is way beyond what you can think or imagine. Therefore, don’t let what you see limit yourself, be courageous and break free from all the imaginary barriers that are probably non-existence in the first place.
Many of the challenges exists only in the mind and may not be a real obstacle. You are as strong as you think within your heart. The bible says: “For as he thinks within himself, so he is.”
So, what is the wise thing to do with respect to the things that you can or cannot change? I am sure everyday all of us are bombarded with a decision making challenge on these two. If you think that you will be happy only when you get all the things in life that you think will make you happy, then you will be very miserable for the rest of your life. The reason is very simple, you may not get it at all. Or you may get the things that you think will make you happy, but after getting it, you will notice that there are many other things in life that will continue to make you unhappy. This is the key, you are not happy because of the things that are happening in your favour, but it is how you manage and your attitude to react to the adversity that come against you.
Learn to manage the things that you can’t change. Commit it to God and let God take control of your life. Life is too short to dwell on those things that upset you. If life throws you a lemon, use it to make lemonade. If people are rude to you, you do not have to lower yourself like them and retaliate with rudeness. Any eye for an eye is never going to solve the problems, it only aggregates and worsen it.
The story was told of a female student who was constantly laughed at by her classmate for not having tried sexual intercourse with any man. One day, what she said shut up the mouth of all those who laughed at her and made all of them walked away with embarrassment. She said boldly to them, “for me to be like you, one night is all it takes. For you to be like me, never again!” Wow, that was a good one. Managing an adverse situation with wisdom instead of approaching it with ugly arguments.
Dare to be different from the masses. Just like a diamond, the reason why diamond is expensive is because it is rare in this world. Stone is cheap or worthless, because they are everywhere. When the world comes against you, be of good cheers. That’s because you are different from them and you are the precious jewel of this world. No one take notice on people who are mediocre, but most people throw punches on people who are outstanding out of jealousy due to their own inferiority complex.
Haters are a good problem to have. Nobody hates the good one. They hate the great ones.
I realized that intimidation didn’t really exist if you’re in the right frame of mind.
~ Kobe Bryant
Your confidence is not based on your look, neither is it based on your status in the society or how wealthy you are. True confidence comes from within, the inner person that resides in you. Do you know that you are unique in this world? There is no two person with the same thumb print as you. You are in fact one of a kind, wonderfully and preciously made in the image of God.
If your trust is in your own strength and might to succeed in life, then it may not be long that you will be upset. The reason is very simple. Human capability is finite, but the challenges in life is infinite. Only God is infinite and omnipotent. Give God the full control and trust Him in every areas of your life, I assure you that He can manage it better than you do.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6
If there are areas in your life that you know that is not within your control to change it. Submit it to God. If God did not let you have it, it may most probably because it is not good for your to have it. If it is good for you, God would let it happens to you long ago. Surrender this portion and give no thought to what you cannot change. Remember, in the midst of adversity, you still can be happy by adjusting your attitude towards the unchangeable. Everyday is a chance for you to improve and get better if you approach each day with a positive attitude.
Nothing is absolute in this world. When something seemly good happens to you, don’t be too quite to rejoice. Similarly, when the bad happens, it may not be fatal, but could be the beginning of a good chapter. There was a famous Chinese Proverbs of “Sai Weng Lost His Horse” (塞翁失馬) that illustrates this perfectly. Let me tell you about this Proverbs below.
Sai Weng lived on the border and he raised horses for a living. One day, he lost one of his favorite horses. When his neighbor heard about his misfortune, they felt sorry for him and came to comfort him. But Sai Weng simply said, “How could we know it is not a good thing for me?”
After a while, the lost horse returned and with another beautiful horse. The neighbor came over again and congratulated Sai Weng on his good fortune. But Sai Weng simply said again, “How could we know it is not a bad thing for me?”
One day, his son went out for a ride with the new horse. He was violently thrown from the horse and broke his leg. The neighbors once again gave their condolences to Sai Weng, but Sai Weng simply said, “How could we know it is not a good thing for me?” One year later, war broke out in the region and the Emperor’s army arrived at the village to recruit all able-bodied men to fight in the war. Because of his injury, Sai Weng’s son could not go off to war, and was spared from certain death.
The next time you encounter nasty things, remind yourself that this may be another thing that you cannot change. Ask yourself this simple question, is there anything that you can change to improve the situations? I assure and declare to you that life will get better and you will now see the world differently.
